Have You Ever Been Tempted to Steal Another Man's Lemons?
For G's birthday, we drove out to Palm Springs. We stayed at the Orbit In -- a small modern hotel by architect and builder Herb Burns that we've long admired. Weekday rates, baby!
We were lucky to have Orbitinis with the new owners Kevin and Jinny. Jinny is in textiles -- OMG, incredible linens. Made me want to bonfire my bed at home. Impressive Julius Shulman photography on the walls. A heavily laden lemon tree in the front yard. Which, in the darkness of night, lemons would fall in our bags. Almost throwing themselves at us.
In the morning, the neighbor-owner offered for us to take as many lemons as we'd like. We ducked our heads and thanked him. Then stuffed the trunk.

The Inspiration The day before we arrived in Palm Springs, a wind storm blew through. Fifty mile an hour winds, Kevin told us, turned the saline pool green and peeled the roofs off houses. It also tore the citrus off the trees. He and his wife collected lemons, limes, and grapefruit of the streets and donated it to the city. Good people. ~All of us, G, S, T, and V |
The Cocktail: PS Lemon Drop 2 oz vodka 1 oz fresh squeezed lemon juice (about one half lemon) 1 oz simple syrup Wet edge of glass with lemon. Rim with super-fine sugar. Shake all ingredients. Serve up. When you get home from Palm Springs. To remind you of the good times. Ah. |
Be smart, safe, and healthy. Drink in moderation. Don't drink and drive to or from Palm Springs, California. No matter what the cocktail recipe. Or how sunny it is. Or even if the desert winds are sleeping and you have plenty of fresh lemons on the bar. Your hosts at Thursday Happy Hour thank you.
