I order a Mojito only under very special circumstances:
1) It's hot outside.
and
2) The bartender is offering it as a specialty drink.
Otherwise, forget it. A Mojito cocktail without fresh ingredients or know-how is sure to give your tongue something foul to say.
My sister gave us the mint plant as a hosting gift -- we celebrated Mother's Day at our place -- and the bartender in our house spotted an opportunity. He modified the traditional Mojito recipe by adding pineapple we happened to have on hand (buck fifty at Henry's market). The combination of minty scent and pineapple sweet with bubbles on top ... mmm. It's like meditation.

The Inspiration : The Mint Bush Summer drink recipes are often made up of fresh ingredients. As fresh fruit and herbs start to pile up and smell potent at the market, we snatch them up at cheap prices and blend them, grind them, and freeze them in ice cubes for summer mixed drinks. This mint plant was dug up from my sister's yard. ~Shelly |
The Cocktail: Pineapple Mojito (Note: Read full cocktail recipe before making.) 2 oz white rum (we used leftover Bacardi Silver) 1 tablespoon simple syrup juice of 1/2 fresh sqeezed lime 5 fresh mint leaves 3 1-inch cubes of fresh pineapple splash of soda Add mint leaves and pineapple chunks in a shaker. Muddle well. Fill shaker with ice. Add rum, sugar and lime juice. Shake well. Strain into glass of crushed ice. Top with splash of soda water. |
Be smart, safe, and healthy. Drink in moderation. Don't down too many rum drinks this summer, even if it's really hot outside and you're practicing mindfulness meditation in lotus position in the shade of a lime tree near a tangy smelling herb garden. Even then.
