It's ... Good?
You probably won't like this cocktail. In fact, you probably can't get the main ingredient for it. So you won't even make it. We received our latest bottle of feijoa-infused vodka as a gift from Chase Jarvis. G was skipping with happiness. I was ... less so.
Because, a Possum Hunt is, in fact, a weird-funky-ass tasting drink. Bubbles. Licorice. Lemon. But it also grows on you. Like kimchi or li hing mui. You may not find feijoa-infused vodka in the States, but you might experiment with these others.
Ack! You will not believe what just happened.
That was seriously weird. I'm typing, and I hear this popping sound over the music
. So I ask the cat outside what it is. Then I remember it sounds very much like ... a possum eating cat food. Close up the garage! Grab the camera! It's possum season. Again.

The Inspiration Chase Jarvis and Gary Allard both have possum stories. Gary's involved a squatter in our garage. Chase's goes something like this: The Jarvis team was shooting in New Zealand, where they make 42 Below vodka with pure bottom-of-the-volcano water and some infusions, like feijoa and kiwi. New Zealand also has many possums. But in NZ, unlike the States, their possums are kind of cute -- soft and furry, but also weird. Like this drink. From some freak stroke of creative genius, Chase and team created a drink of questionable drinkability and named it after an animal of questionable appeal. And it coincided with our garage story. So. There you have it. For more creative genius, follow @chasejarvis, @gee_allard, and @shelbow on Twitter. For more wild drink ideas follow @thurshappyhour. |
The Cocktail Recipe
: Chase Jarvis' Possum Hunt (their studio-house drink) 2 oz 42 Below feijoa-infused vodka (or another infused vodka, like Square One Cucumber or Hangar One Spiced Pear or Chipotle) ... whatever sounds weird to you juice of one quarter lemon splash of soda or sparkling water Start with a FULL glass of ice and very cold vodka. Really get all the juice out of those lemons; squeeze over the ice. Pour in infused vodka. Add just a SMALL splash of soda. Chase says, "Too much soda wrecks this delicacy." Drink it. Are you a fan of Thursday Happy Hour? We are. |
A big, hearty THANKS to Chase Jarvis and crew for supplying the inspiration and introducing the recipe to Thursday Happy Hour. We love you guys. Stay cute and fuzzy and prosper. Drink Possum Hunts in moderation. Don't drink and drive. You may hit a possum. Or something bigger. Ew. You may be able to hunt cute and fuzzy possums in New Zealand, but the ugly ones ares protected in California. Go figure.

Ha @chasejarvis, like I said, it does grow on you. Weird-funky-ass isn't always all bad. :)
Michael - nice to meet you! Let us know where/if you find feijoa 42Below.

I'm backing Chase on this. It truly is a refined balance of flavors. Very unexpected and hard to describe. It's too bad the main ingredient is so elusive. If anyone has a line on how to reliably get this stuff in the States, let us know!
