Tokyo Fog

I still can't believe summer is over. It's getting dark early and I'm getting over a cold and I'm wrapping up three projects at once -- it's really been a blur. But planning for the holidays is fun, and one drink that friends inevitably request at the end of an evening is a dessert drink -- a creamy, decadent truffle in a glass. 

Mud Slides are yum, but expected, so when G's friend and creative consultant Leslie suggested a Fog, something she enjoyed with her family at the holidays, we jumped all over it. And we weren't disappointed. In fact, we were gobsmacked.

Our Reaction to the Fog This is no ordinary sweet dessert drink. In fact, it's not really sweet at all. It's a complex concoction of smoky and creamy flavor -- the first sip is an eye opening Wha? Followed by another sip and a Wow. It reminds me of Bourbon Cake, heavy on the bourbon, or maybe Rum Balls that can get you seriously drunk. I'm not a big fan of bourbon, but the Tokyo Fog is now at the top of my dessert cocktails list. I can't wait to make one for my sister.

Tokyo Fog (with thanks to Ed&Alex of DrinkaWeek for digging up this 50s cocktail recipe!) Makes 2 drinks: 4 oz. bourbon 4 oz. cold coffee 4 oz. vanilla ice cream Blend ingredients together. CAUTION: I can't imagine having more than one of these, but if you do, watch out. It is a bourbon drink, even if it does present itself as an innocent dessert. Chill out after you drink it. Don't go speeding off with your head in the fog. Ha-ha.

I think this one would lend itself to some more interesting ice cream flavors too. Mocha? Dark chocolate? Irish cream...?

And if you don't usually have cold coffee around those Starbucks Via packets work great for cocktails.

Thanks for the shout-out, it's nice to see the Fog making its way into the hearts of others!

As it regards whipped cram -- A variation I've done when I wanted to go over the top is to serve it in a cocktail glass with a dollop of whipped cream, and a chocolate covered coffee bean set in the center, with some shaved dark chocolate to boot. Send that out with a piece of biscotti and you've got dessert and drinks all in one.
