My Seaside Discovery
Gary's dad loves the ocean. Whenever he and his wife come to visit, we make every effort to walk along a pier, a boat deck, or an ocean-rimming boardwalk. This time we did all three. We walked down Harbor Drive in San Diego, gazed up at the sails of the Star of India, then boarded the Midway, an aircraft carrier-turned museum, for a three-hour tour.
When the huge bay doors began to roll up, it just happened to be happy hour. And we just happened to be walking distance to The Fish Market, where the boys drank Ballast Point ales and slurped oysters, and us girls discovered the luscious Pear Flower martini.
| Fresh New Flavor: St-Germain We've wanted to try this French liqueur for some time. After tasting the Pear Flower, we bought a small bottle of St-Germain to try with other classic drinks. St-Germain tastes like fresh pears, elderflower and eau de vie. And a little like lychee juice. Splash it into just about any fresh and light cocktail. Try a little in a gin and tonic or substitute the sugar in a Champagne Cocktail. Got your own favorite St-Germain drink? Tweet it to us or tell us about it on Facebook. |
Pear Flower Martini (our adaptation) 3 oz. Grey Goose le Poire vodka Combine all ingredient in a shaker FULL of ice and shake vigorously. Strain into a cocktail glass and garnish with a thin pear slice or wedge. Note: This is equally delicious, yet slightly different, without the elderflower cordial -- or with plain vodka. Experiment with the recipe and tell us how you do. |
CAUTION: Walking happy hours are fun. By the time you walk all the way back to your car in the chilly night air, even the sober designated driver is more perky than usual.
