At a conference on the bay, I was spoiled by a constant presence of libations: dark coffee with real cream, Mighty Leaf hot tea, tiny soda bottles on ice, and sweating silver pitchers of water. Somehow, a drink in hand, any drink, makes chatting with strangers easier.
Drinks and "what do you dos" should come even more easily at the nonsponsored evening networking mixer, right?, considering alcohol is involved. I was disappointed.
$11 later, a tiny glass packed with ice in hand, I slurped up the vapors of gin and tonic before even stepping away from the black cloaked bar-stand.
Lucky for me, G was busy crushing fresh cranberries for my arrival home.

I recently read that bartenders are being given a hard time by the government for infusing alcohols with herbs or fruit. I'm sad to think that more and more bartenders are going to simply be spigot pushers, fearing reprisal, and we're all going to have to make our own delicious concoctions at home. We better start collecting fruit and herbal infusion recipes. Got any of your own? Tweet it to us or tell us about it on Facebook. |
Cranberry Thyme Crush 2.5 oz. gin In a mixing glass or shaker, muddle the cranberries and 2 - 3 thyme sprigs until well crushed. Add the gin and let "steep." Next, add the remaining ingredients to a separate mixer filled with ice. Strain the gin through a sieve into the shaker of ice. Shake all ingredients well and strain into the thyme-infused cocktail glass. Garnish with sprig of thyme (optional) |
CAUTION: Drinking while networking can be helpful in making connections up to a point. Unfortunately, you're not likely to know you've crossed the point until the next morning. Stingy conference drinks are probably for the best.
